Along with the new Pokémon announced for Sword and Shield today, we also got to meet some of the characters.
First up is the Professor of the Galar region, Proffessor Magnolia. Like past professors, Magnolia has a specific element to the game that she researches: Dynamax. To her right is her assistant Sonia. Sonia is Prof. Magnolias granddaughter and will help the main character on their journey. It is important to note that she is childhood friends to the Champion of the Galar region. Also, is it just me, or do these two look like they could be related to Lusamine from Sun and Moon (see the necklace around Prof. Magnolia and her color scheme) and Lysandre (Sonias red hair).

Next we have the first announced Gym Leader, Milo.
We don't know much about him other than he uses Grass-types including his ace, Eldegoss. It is also said that he specalized in "Endurance matches" which may be a hit to a new style of Gym battles. Could the 831 on his shorts be the Pokedex number to Eldegoss?
I'm really excited about these two characters, Leon and Hop.
Leon is the Champion of the Galar region and his ace Pokémon Charizard. All that we know about him so far is that he has never been defeated in an official battle and his is very popular in the Galar region.
His little brother Hop will be the rival in the game. But we need to note something really quick:
Is it just me or do these two brothers look like Iris from the Black and White games? There are interesting resemblances to her with their eyes and skin tone. It would be interesting to see if this game ties in all the families from other games.
